Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
