Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Clear Book 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
