Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the luminious Book. 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
