Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
