Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
