Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
