Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
