The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Star when it plunges, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
