The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
