The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred. 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
