The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
