The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is a revelations which has been revealed to him 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
