The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 then came down close 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
