A numerous company from among the first, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
