▼ 56 The Inevitable
Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
