Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
a good many of olden times, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
