a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
