A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 "We are ruined, 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
