A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
