a large throng from the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
