A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
