A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
