The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
