The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Save worshippers. 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
