The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 but We see it near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
