The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
