The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
