The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)

In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 save those that pray 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
