The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
