The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and all those on earth. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray, 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
