The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
