The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
