The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 except those who are steadfast 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
