20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 keep vigil the night, except a little 2 A half of it or a little less 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Behold, We shall bestow upon thee a weighty message 5 Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Lord of the eastern and western regions, with due sincerity. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 choking food and a painful punishment. 13 On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired? 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 Verily, this is an admonition, therefore whosoever will, let him take a Path to His Lord! 19
