Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 A half of it or a little less 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire, 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 The heavens itself will be rent asunder (on that day). His promise is bound to be fulfilled. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
