The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 and purify your robes, 4 Pollution shun! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
