O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 Purify your inner self, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 and who still desires more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
