The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 Arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
