The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
