The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he looked round; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
