The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then looked he, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed any one but angels as keepers of Hell, and their number that We have fixed is to make it a means of contention for disbelievers, so that those who were given the Book may be certain, and the faith of the believers may have greater increase, and the people of the Book and believers may not be deceived, and the sceptics and infidels may say: "What does God mean by this parable?" That is how God leads whosoever He will astray, and guides whosoever He will. None knows the armies of your Lord save Him self. This is no more than reminder for mankind. 31
