The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 and purify your robes, 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
