The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
