The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and who still desires more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 Blackening the skins. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
