The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise and give warning! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 and purify your robes, 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
