Nay, by the Moon 32 And by the Night as it retreateth, 33 By the morning when it brighteneth. 34 Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) 35 as a warner to mortals. 36 Whoever of you desires to progress or lag behind. 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 except those of the right hand 39 [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other 40 Concerning the guilty: 41 What hath brought you to this burning? 42 They shall say: We were not of those who prayed; 43 Nor did we feed the wretched. 44 "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 45 And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 46 “Till death overcame us.” 47 So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them. 48 What is the matter with them that they turn away from this Reminder, 49 as if they were startled asses 50 Fleeing from a hunter, or a lion, or a beast of prey. 51 Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out! 52 Nay! But they fear not the Hereafter (from Allah's punishment). 53 Nay, this surely is an admonition: 54 So, whoever wills, will remember it. 55 And they shall not heed unless Allah willeth. He is the Lord of piety, and the Lord of forgiveness. 56
