Nay, by the moon, 32 and by the night when it recedes, 33 By the morning when it brighteneth. 34 This is but one of the mighty (portents), 35 a warning to mortal man 36 alike to every one of you, who want to go forward or hang back. 37 Every soul will be a pledge for that which it hath earned, 38 save those who shall have attained to righteousness: 39 In Gardens; they shall be asking, 40 Of evil-doers: 41 "What has brought you into the Fire of Hell ?" 42 They will say: we have not been of those who prayed. 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 And we have been wading with the waders. 45 And rejected the Day of Judgement as a lie 46 Until the certainty (of death) had come upon us. 47 So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them. 48 Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?- 49 as though they were frightened wild asses, 50 fleeing -- before a lion? 51 Indeed, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls. 52 By no means. In fact they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 Nay, this surely is an admonition: 54 so whoever wills shall remember it. 55 But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness. 56
