He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him you give attention. 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And whereas he fears, 9 you ignore him. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted and purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
