He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 So you are after him! 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and fearfully, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted, pure. 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And olives and palms 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 but others will be gloomy 40 with darkness overspread: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
