He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And he feareth 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 uplifted, purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And his mother and his father 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
